XMU students win the first prize in the 3rd China Undergraduate Life Science Contest
From November 8 to 10, 2019, the 3rd China Undergraduate Life Science Contest (CULSC) came to an end in Shaanxi Normal University. 4,797 works from 411 colleges and universities registered for the competition. After fierce competitions, participating teams from Xiamen University (XMU) stood out from the other 156 teams in the finals, winning the first prize.

Professors Yang Chunyan from School of Life Sciences (SLS), Xiamen University was the instructor for the XMU team that advanced to the finals. The team comprised three undergraduate students from SLS, namely Hu Yu, Huang Linglong from class of 2021 and Wen Zijie from class of 2020. Their project, was "The Selection of Whitening Compounds and Its Mechanism Research Based on the Models of Zebrafish".
At the preliminary stage, after careful experimental design, the team uploaded several experimental results and data to the official platform, and finally completed the experimental report and their paper. From November 2 to 3, 2019, the team stood out from other participating teams in the Fujian division and advanced to the national finals with the first place in Fujian Province. In the finals, over 50 experienced judges from Teaching Guidance Committee and colleges and universities conducted on-site assessment of all the teams. Under the careful guidance of the instructor, participating students performed well in the final defense, winning the first prize.
Besides, another team from XMU instructed by teachers Zuo Zhenghong and He Chengyong from SLS won the third prize with their project "The Influence and Mechanism of Polychlorinated Biphenyl on the Development of Zebrafish Pancreatic Islets".
