Student from Confucius Institute jointly established by XMU at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Nigeria wins the championship for Africa Division in the 12th Chinese Bridge

On November 1, 2019, the 12th Chinese Bridge, Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students sponsored by the Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban) was held and came to a successful end in Zhengzhou. Contestant Gu Siyuan (Samuel Miracle) from the Confucius Institute jointly established by Xiamen University (XMU) and Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Nigeria (hereinafter "NAU Confucius Institute") won the championship for Africa Division.

On October 22, 2019, the finals of the Chinese Bridge kicked off in Zhengzhou with 124 contestants from 119 divisions representing 105 countries, participated. After fierce competitions, 16-year-old contestant Gu Siyuan from NAU Confucius Institute advanced to the intercontinental finals as the champion of Africa division, and finally Zheng Yanke from Italy won the world champion.

Before studying in NAU Confucius Institute in October 2018, Gu Siyuan knew nothing about Chinese. However, he was hard working and diligent. After six months of study, his Chinese reached intermediate level. In the HSK 4 exam in early June 2019, he got the highest score (292 out of 300) in Nigeria that year.

NAU Confucius Institute has participated in the Chinese Bridge for three consecutive years and achieved remarkable results. NAU Confucius Institute first participated in the competition in 2017. Han Maoyu (Michael Harford) from the school won the second place that year in the Nigeria division. In 2018, Ding Jiaming (EkwensiAnthony Ebuka) from NAU Confucius Institute won the championship in the Nigeria division and finally won the championship in the Africa division, and was awarded the title of "Chinese Ambassador". It was the first time that a Nigerian student won this honor.
