UK Minister for Asia and the Pacific visits XMU

Mr. Alok Sharma MP, Britain´s Minister for Asia and the Pacific headed his delegation to visit XMU earlier this month, exploring new opportunities for Sino-UK trade and cooperation. As a member of British Parliament, Mr. Sharma was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office last year. The delegation he led this time consists of business leaders in health care and life sciences. On the morning of Feb. 15, the delegation was received by Zhu Chongshi, President of XMU, at Song´en Building. Also present were Matthew Rous, the Consulate General in Guangzhou and Prof. Wu Daguang, Vice President of XMU.

On behalf of XMU, President Zhu Chongshi extended a warm welcome to the guests and introduced to the delegation the information concerning XMU´s partnership with its UK counterparts as well as  the construction of XMU Malaysia Campus. Xiamen University, according to President Zhu, was among the earliest in mainland China to establish collaborative relationships with UK peers and research institutions thanks to the solid support from both governments in education, science & technology as well as cultural exchanges, the benefits of which accruing to both sides have borne abundant fruits in multiple fields and forms. Medicine and Life Sciences are among the key disciplines, the construction of which would top the agenda at Xiamen University at present and in the future. It is hoped that Mr. Sharma´s visit could further widen and deepen the cooperation between XMU and its UK peers, so as to boost the development of the aforementioned disciplines and other more of XMU. It´s also hoped that the visit of Mr. Sharma and his delegation would bring global attention and assistance to the newly established Malaysia Campus of XMU, noted President Zhu.

The members of the delegation also voiced their opinions as regards how to elevate communication and cooperation between the UK and China in the field of medicine and life sciences.

Mr. Sharma expressed his appreciation for the achievements XMU has made in its endeavour to run a university from a global perspective. British universities, he said, have carried out multifaceted cooperation with China in multiple fields such as medical training, research, clinical services as well as construction and renovation of medical facilities, etc. The United Kingdom wishes to go even further in this direction, and to promote the exchanges between the youths from both countries, in particular, said Mr. Sharma.

The members of the delegation also voiced their opinions as regards how to elevate communication and cooperation between the UK and China in the field of medicine and life sciences.
